If you are happy with your car as it is then great !! if you would like to get a little more response out of it .... a little more ''get up and go'' .... a little more power up the top end of 5000 rpm - red line ( 6500 rpm for you diesel boys ;) ) then i would consider getting some ''IRIDIUM SPARK PLUGS ''
There has been a lot of negative feedback off peeps about after market spark plugs .... but the ''IRIDIUM'' for the 3.2 is a fantastic mod ..... one that I've just had the pleasure of making !!!! and i would challenge ANYONE who would tell me different !!
So i got into the car after it had been done , and the 1st thing i noticed was that the throttle was more sensitive , then after going onto the motorway i found that the car pulled better at the top of the rev range and the overall mid range felt incredible ... 70 - 90 in top gear was superb and 4th was just brill !!!
so what you all waiting for go and get um .... you wont be sorry
but the fitting is slightly more difficult .. lucky i had the main mans expertise ( mark ,gsi 3.2 ) and his glamorous assistant (Cara ) to look after the kiddies
so thanks to them 2 ( again ) .. i always seem to be thanking them one way or another ;) but i couldn't and wouldn't been in such a healthy position if it wasn't for them !!!! also a little matter of a vxr rear spoiler i picked up today as well .. already sprayed to my colour ..... absolute blooming stars the both of them !!!!

Ah nice one Phil, 2 birds with one stone. Seems aunty Cara came ot the rescue whilst u played with Mark doing the plugs.. I wonder if the throttle was more sensitive than my poor old head on Sunday morning! Lets hope the others take note and get the IRIDIUM plugs too

Yeah, it was all an act to get the sympathy vote from Mark and let him have the VXR spoiler!! :D ;)
Only joking m8. I missed all the cafuffle - think I was walking a bit ahead of you lot at the time. Hope you're all back on the mend now. :)
What do you expect though not eating the night before and just a Mars bar for breakfast - a man of your build! What you like eh?

I've been running Denso ik22's for a month or so now... cant say i've noticed much difference.
but for those wanting to give iridiums ago.. you'll need:
Denso ik20 for standard car
Denso ik22 for slightly tuned (colder plugs) eg: BSR! ! :D
Denso have a 0.4mm tip but NGK also do iridium plugs but have a larger tip 0.6mm.

i can't comment on the 2.0 Turbo'd lump but the difference it gives to the 3.2 are fantastic !!!

well you certainly seemed happy on the Phone mate.. :D
2LtrT, these aren't denso's these are NGK iridiums...a set of which will find their way under my bonnet shortly...
so re-map....and iriduim..we'll see what happens...Jayson at ChippedUK did say that at high RPM the standard VX plug with it's multi electrode has it's spark 'blown out' by the gases, and that a single electrode was the way forward....I Think Phil's proved him right

after this the whole of the inlet ( everything you see in the last pic) had to come off and i was unable to take anymore pics as i was holding the inlet away from the plugs .......
You're determined to show that Mondeo who's boss aren't you Phil. ;)

I have run Denso Irdium plugs before on one of my cars and the tips broke off. Keep an eye on these.
BUT this was a highly tuned turbo 4 cylinder lump. The V6 engine will be alot less stressed I am sure.
I wouldn't put these plugs in a turbo engine.

I wouldn,t mind doing that "mod" to mine, where do they sell the iridium plugs, and will any gaskets need replacing...
Gsi3.2
12th July 2006, 22:34
The plugs come from courtney and no Ed, no gaskets need replacing.. they've changed to re-usable seals moulded into the castings mate..
you will need help to support the plenum chamber once it's unbolted as you need to hold it clear to remove the spark packs..just don't drive for 1 1/2 hours down the M1 first as phil found it hot to hold.. :D :D
for a how-2.. drop us a PM mate and i'll tell you what to remove and where..

Based on Phil's results Mark, do you reckon the same plugs in the 2.2 might yield an improvement? Current ones are roughly 2 1/2 years old so could probably do with replacing anyway.
Gsi3.2
12th July 2006, 22:41
well they can't do any harm.. they're supposed to work better at high RPM than the standard plugs and i don't know about yours but C's 2.2 seems to spend a lot of it's time up the rev range..
Phil seemed really happy with his..said the response was really crisp now..
I dunno, but i'm putting a set in when they arrive.. ;) :D
Spikey©
12th July 2006, 22:56
Looks like Iridium plugs are not recommended for the 2.2, not listed on Coutenays and found a plug guide, this also misses out the 2.2 for these plugs :(

Part No. ???
For the 3.2L V6 NGK Iridium Spark Plugs.
Will they last the 60000kms between spark plugs change intervals, or should they be changed every 15 - 30000kms?

All I can Say on Phils behalf..(as he's on holiday for 2 weeks).. is that he reckons it makes a noticeable difference at higher rpm..
Where?? www.courtenaysport.co.uk..£48 for the set..
Can you fit it yourself?? yes it's possible but involved as you have to completely remove the intake plenumb down to the injector plate..It took two of us, one working, one holding, but it isn't rocket science..

As they are single electrodes, i prob wouldn't leave them in there for 60,000K's..
As for part no. i'll ask Big Phil if he's still got the boxes when he's back from his hols.. :D
Either that or use the linkabove to buy direct from courtneay.

Right, found an alternative for the 2.2 seeing as the NGK ones don't go. They are Denso ITV16, similar specs to the NGK. Here's a question for Mark though, what's the gap supposed to be on the 2.2? The Denso's are set to 1.1mm, sound about right?

Spikey, I was doing some digging on these yesterday, the non-direct and direct 2.2s use different plugs, just be careful when ordering.

I just looked up the Australian NGK website;
Part No. BKR6EQUP (0.9 Gap) Z32SE
UK Website;
Part No. BKR5EQUPA (Preset Gap) Z32SE
Interesting to note the different heat ranges of the plugs.
However neither site show a cross reference to the NGK Iridium Plugs.

that'll do fine mate.. with the higher power of the spark packs over a standard coil setup, it'll make a lovely crack.. ;) :D ;)

Yes mate, did some digging about and that's why I ended up with the Denso's, the NGK ones do not go in the 2.2, but the Denso's do :D they are different to all the other Denso's for the vec range of engines.

for you it's easy as 1-2-3... :D
all you've got to do is un-plug and remove that black coil unit that runs in between the camshafts...pull it up after removing the bolts and you'll see the plug tops.. :D
remove the plugs, replace with ya new one's, re-install the spark pack and away you go...
The 2.2 is the easiest one to do..

Hi,
This has probably been covered a 1000 times!!, But can anyone confirm the part numbers for the Iridium Plugs for a 2004 3.2 GSI, both NGK and Denso. Also any thoughts on Lowest price's presently?
My 3.2 is on LPG, and is missing Badly on both LPG and Petrol up hills, under load etc, so 1st job change the Plugs and Coil Packs?
Any other thoughts?
Kind Regards
Adam
