Just wondering if anyone else had this problem.
Went out to my car this morning, and found the o/s/f spring had gone - the car was right down on the bump stop. When I jacked it up to see what was going on, a bit of the spring dropped out :(
Anyway, it's under Sureguard and I had the home rescue thing from Vauxhall (thank God) and the AA came and collected it.
As it is under warranty - it's a 2004 54 reg the dealer will be picking up the bill (I hope!) but it was quite worrying thinking about that going at speed!

As Mark suggests. Try and get the pair out of them, things like that (springs, shock absorbers, brakes etc) should always be changed in pairs if at all possible. Good luck with it mate

Had a phone call from my local dealer this morning. They asked "What's wrong with the car?"
It's lopsided, makes horrible noises when it moves and has a coil segment on the passenger seat!!!! What did they think? I got one lowering coil off Ebay and was waiting for the rest?

Got my car back this morning - they changed both springs without any trouble.
They said it was probably a dodgy casting, and hadn't herd of it being a regular problem.
It was quick and easy so I am pleased! :D

I too have had the same problem - driving on a normal road at 40 then crack! about 7 inches of the offside front spring fell off! mine is a 2002 2.0dti. Taken in the same day to vx and replaced both front springs - blaming an imperfection in the casting! common problem me thinks!

more common than you could possibly imagine..
by the way,it's a fob-off.. ;)
springs aren't cast..but hot-rolled from a coil of springsteel rod..

I have kept the piece that snapped off, much to the vauxhall garage's dislike and said I might go to the AA or someone who can offer an detailed explanation as to what happened. I sure wouldn't want it to happen to anyone who is driving at speed. They also tried to fob me off with just replacing the near side spring - no chance, i stood my ground and they finally replaced both.

My 52 plate Vectra developed a really annoying rattle from the o/s/f area. It drove me mad for months, I checked all round the engine bay and under the car until one day I had the wheel off and found that about 40mm of the coil spring had snapped off. it was still held in place by the plastic coating, and was tapping the shock when it normally sits. I thought it was my bad luck until I read this post.... funny. Because the spring snapped so near the end, its made no difference to my ride height and the car is still drivable. intend to change the springs this month.
Just out of interest, what do Vauxhall charge for a pair of springs? They're about £40 a side on eBay, pattern part
