Grinding Noise

Hi guys, just came home from work earlier and had the windows down in the car and as i was pulling away i could here a grinding/catching noise with every revolution of the wheel, one that gets faster/slower with your speed. :eek: I detected it coming from the passenger side, so when i got home i took the wheel off and stuck my head under the wheel arch and rotated the brake disc i thought it maybe something catching on the disc/pads, but the noise is coming from where the axle goes into the gearbox (it looks like the gearbox, on the passenger side), at a certain point on every revolution it makes a rubbing/grinding noise.

I'm a bit concerned, hope were not talking mega bucks here, my Network Q warranty ran out, i only have the 3rd year manufacturers warranty left. I hope the problem will be covered?

Any ideas what could be wrong?

sonds like the inner cv joint from what you describe , although i may be wrong and as thats a general wear and tear item i dont think your warranty will cover it mate as i say hopefully im wrong! if it is that then they are not that expensive to repair

i place my bet to the wheel bearing.. i just changed mine and the symptoms were the same.

in my case the sound came from the drivers side (cause i live in mexico and my drivers side is your passenger side)

also i thought at first it was from the gearbox but fortunately it was the bearing.

To be sure you will need to release the driveshaft from the wheel so it runs alone without any friction from the gearbox.

my car had about 60000km when the noise began.

i can describe the sound as an annoying "HUM-HUM-HUM" that increase the speed and makes it very very unpleasent between 60 and 80kph. also at slower speeds in quiet places such as underground parking lots

Actually when i went to my car the next day, all fired up to take it to the stealer, it didn't make the noise anymore :shocked: i couldn't exactly go and ask them to listen to a noise that wasn't there. No doubt the problem will rear its head again next january when my warranty runs out! :( , thats assuming the problem would have been covered anyway.

As the title says "mine is new brakes" at the front making the noise, as they were fitted by a spanner (actually he is a motor engineer and a ****** good one) it is going back in a few hours for a check up. but they are screeching when coming to a stand, cant be the bearing (I hope), this has just been done, suspect build up of old brake dust between the ball joint and the shield as the discs are new also, they would be close to the shield with little or no gap for the dust to disperse adequately. I sometimes blast mine with a pressure washer, this cleans the stuff away but as the discs are new, it is not clearing this away at the moment and my mate will take another look later. Hope this helps you with yours.

did he assemble the pads into the calipers with copper grease??

that would cure what you are experiencing, the brake squeal..

It shouldn't be dust as if he's just fitted new brakes and he's worth his salt he'll have cleaned it all way from any surfaces that matter.

overslept after nights so car didnt go in, and yep copper grease iclearly evident and he has told me that he is now busy for two weeks, grrrrrrrrrr, he also told me they took the whole thing apart and blasted the dust away with pressurised air

well that's very poor practice anyway :eek:

the brakes don't contain asbestos like they used to, but even so the use of compressed air to blow away the dust is a big no-no..they should have used a brake cleaning spray..far safer way of doing it without breaking HSE regs.

i'm getting a bad feel about this chap that did them for you now unfortunatly. :( :mad:
