i need a new pair of front tyres for my 2.2 DTi signum, its done 18k on these so not so bad,
they are however now down to 2mm on the front and 4mm on the back and i'm in the market for new,

i currently have Goodyear Eagle NCT5 215/50/17's which are W rated ( upto 150mph i understand ) Clicky Linky (http://www.tyresave.co.uk/tyrspeed.html)

anywayz, after trawling ebay i have found a few options , either...

Yokohama velocity xtreme 225/45/17's Z rated

or

Continental Barum 225/45/17's Z rated

these work out about £50 each including the postage for 4 brand new ones

what do you think ???

BB

dont think either of these are bad prices BB however yokohamas are a softer compound than most hence good grip but they only last about 10,000 miles so will need replacing sooner conti barums are a budget tyre so again not good life expectancy on these ive just put two avon zz3 225/45/17 Y rated on my 2.2dti sri veccy from national tyres cost all in £160 and have now done about 1000 miles on them fantastic wet and dry grip and also nice and quiet on the road plus they are a harder compound so (HOPEFULLY) will last a good while HTH!!!!!

14th August 2005, 12:46
thats v-good,

mine have 2mm left , so will easily get me to 20k if needed, the rears have over 5mm left and are good for ages,

i do however like to get new boota all round, for looks if nothing else

the goodyears have performed well, and are W rated, so are well capable

I recenty swapped front to back tyres on my 17" eagles. at 20K Ive got 6 mm on the front and 4mm on the back so think they should last for another few 1000's

I used to get 45K out of a set on my vectra B on Mitchelin Energy's

I've got Kumho Ecsta's on my 18's. absolutly useless in the wet. Quite dangerous at times. :(
I'm not sure what to get next though. want something with a good mix of longevity and grip.

Hello guys,

This one I know, it just has to Michelin simple as that, the fact that I work for them has absolutely nothing to do with it :D

And before anyone asks the answer, I'm affraid is no

Bryan

PS did you know there is more than 38 parts in one tyre, just some trivia for you!

Recently changed all 4 tyres from the factory fitted Goodyears to Hankook ***

VENTUS SPORT K104 215/50 ZR17 91Y Rim-protection

These tyres are £50.00 each @ mytyres.co.uk and my car (Vectra 3.0 CDTi Elite) handles far better than on the factory fitted tyres. I have now done over 10,000 miles on these tyres and the fronts still look fairly new, should go at least 25,000 with present rate of wear. Rears still look new.

Just brought 2 Hankook's for my wife's Astra 1.8 SXI, again at £50.00 each.

Best all round tyres I've had at this sort of price.

Avon ZZ3 replaced my SportConti 2 (225/45/17) and £360 for a set of four. 12k miles on they're great, better than the contis!!
Apparently Avon have a new ZZ? 94W rated tyre out that should sharpen up your turn-in.

I just got a pair of ZZ3's, (224/45/17 - there was much consternation from the monkey changing them as I was changing size/profile) today for £152 all in. Very happy with them so far.

Had some Dunlop SP9000's put on the front at the weekend. so far so good.

right,....seeing i started this thread a while back, lol a quick update,

today , i got a puncture in my front right, nothing serious , it was parked up when i noticed it, so swaped a rear wheel to the front and put the horrible space saver on the back, in the rain i might add, lol

i have been looking at tyres since the thread started and got quotes of £285 for a pair of originals fitted, or £193 for 225/45/17's fitted

still a bit steep me thinks
lastnight i lost an auction for four new Yoko's for £185 ( bummer , lol )

tonight i bought 4 new Bridgestone 225/45/17 REO40's for £46 each ( plus £24 postage )

i will get my Bro to fit em for me

what do you think of the Bridgestones , as they normally retain for about £150 each but are on special in some places for £100 each

Just foun a whopping big screwdriver bit in my tyre this morning, it was in the middle section so i thought oh well at least it can be repaired.....

Went to National Tyres and Autocare who removed my wheel, then came over to me and said it can't be repaired because ther was another whopping nail sticking straight through the tyre near the sidewall :(

Explained that i couldn't afford a new tyre until pay day and could he put it back on and give me a quote for 2 new ones (nothng wrong with the other, but i like things matching! :p ) He started reeling off all the top brands from his computer and quoting prices like £204, £190, you get the picture, Hmm not bad for 2 premium tyres i thought.. But hold on that was just for 1  I said your kidding me he said nope, to which i said thank you and goodbye. What a rip off.

So, sorry for the ramble, which leads me to my Question. Been on mytyres.co.uk and quite fancy the Hankook Ventus sport K104's that Paul 2468has recently bought, not a bad price at all and i can get em fitted locally for £10 a piece. I also like the fact that they are rim protectors, because where i live i have to parallel park next to a kerb, they're not a bad tread pattern either. But i fancy getting some Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-d's but it doesn't particularly say that these have rim protection? Also the F1's are 225x45x17, which i know is ok, but does the slight drop in the profile mean i'm gonna have a noticably larger gap in between the wheel and arch??

Cheers

Russ

The rim protecion ..... my F1 GSD3 didnt say so either on the web ... but they do have rim protection ... The F1 GSD2 i had before didnt ...

"Noticably larger gap" .... well ... for 215/50 the sidewalls 10.75cm and for 225/45 10.12cm

I like Michelin tyres. Had a set of Pilot Sports on my Astra which I was really happy with, but they cost nearly £570 for 4! What I wasn't happy with was when one got damaged and when I went to replace it I found out they had stopped making them. I then had to buy a pair so they weren't mismatched. Wasn't going to spend £300 on 2 Michelins, so I had some Falkens fitted. Not much cop, with too much understeer and sliding. Goodyear Eagle F1s are good too, but the GSD3s are very noisy compared to the GSD2s. Also had a pair of Bridgestone Potenza S-03s on the front and they wore out in about 10,000 miles.

Hello all,

Just one thing to note, the rolling circumference MUST remain within 3% of standard or it could affect the ABS system i.e. it could fail.

I've used many a budget tyre over the yrs, so you can get an idea i'll list the memorable ones.

Barums - Good wearing and average roadholding

Nexen - Good Wearing, horrible in the rain

Toyo - Good all round

Michelin - The best IMO

Avon - Good holding average wear

Dunlop - short life good holding

Bridgestone Good all round

Continental - Good all round

Black Horse - average all round

I use the budgets mainly due to the fact that an A grade tyre doesn't seem to last much more than a cheapy, roadholding seems to be the improving factor to a top brand tyre.

1. How do you rate the Kleber tyres and would you use them ?
2. Can you recommend the Dynaxer HP for comfort and silence over the Premency, or are they made the same way, just using lower spec materials ?
(Can you tell I've been reading the Kleber website)

If this helps you, I ran them for about 2 yrs, my mate used to do me a deal on them, they used to be about £5 dearer than your average Checz budget tyre, they held the road pretty good and a pair on the front of my then Vectra B would last around 12k, but this was due to 2 factors, 1 it was a taxi, and 2 the car had an issue with uneven wear both back and front, I didn't realise when I bought it it had a hidden past, new # plate and the hatch door run on one side had been botch repaired, didn't check it that well when buying, from a Q dealer you'd assume you wouldn't have to, on closer inspection we found it had had 3 # plates in one yr and the service book had International written in it, HPi didn't list anything, but I bet if I'd run it through German records I think it may well have been a write off, and no pro paintshop would have left the rear as I found it so it must have been repaired without the insurance company knowing anything about it.

Cant say anything on the Mich's as I dont use £130 a pop tyres, but I'd say you can probably assume they will be top notch.

I can't compare to other btands as I have never bought a tyre in my life, always had Michelin, Kleeber or BFG supplied and fitted at work ;)

For a long time I made the mistake of using cheap tyres. Recently, the last 3 years I've switched to top quality tyres, not your Max Power 500mph rated ones but Michelin's & Bridgestone's.
However I travel around a lot visiting manufacturing sites in all areas of business and some places they may make a well known brand and a cheap brand side by side by the same process, ingredients, etc. The food industry and cosmetic industry spring to mind and was wondering if this happened in the tyre business.

As I was typing this out Bryan came in like a bolt from the blue.

In short, Yes. As long as the same axle wears the same tyres with the same sizes across the car then to have a difference front to back is acceptable.

For blr123

Bryan,

I had the opportunity to buy 2 Michelin Pilot Primacy 215/50 R17 tyres for £30 each, brand new from a Renault dealer clearing his stores. Great I thought until I noticed that they were of a load rating of 91 whereas those on my Signum are 95. The 91 load rating is well above the Siggy's axle load but I checked with Vauxhall Customer Services if I could use them. No idea was the immediate reply but we will ask Germany they said. Came back the next day and said MOST DEFINITELY NO! If I fitted them my warranty would be invalidated and I could be breaking the law as replacement tyres must be of the same specification as the original fitment.

I notice that some of the people on here have 91s fitted from their car photographs so they may be in trouble. Or are those used on Vectras 91 rated as they are lighter than Signums?

I would appreciate your comments.

Bainie

It is the 3.0 V6`s that need the extra rating on the tyres are far as I am aware, the extra weight on the engine ??
