Hi all,
Been having a few probs with my 1.9 CDTi recently and been thinking of swapping it for a 2.0T. Problem is, when I test drove the two back-to-back the diesel seemed the best all rounder. I had a 2.0T try to outrun me on the motorway the other day (after the muppet nearly took the nose of my car) and his car couldnt even start to pull away.
There are still strong rumours that Vauxhall will be releasing a CDTI VXR (Twin Turbo Model) that will out drag the current GSI 3.2. Am I better waiting and getting this or going back to petrol vectras. The VXR Vectra is VERY tempting.
My Wife has a VW Golf GTi 180 and this feels quicker to drive but no quicker when we have been following each other. (Please no comments about female drivers)
Just after a few opinions. Cheers folks

i believe the twin turbo will not be until the vectra d mate although a friend was at the nurenburgring last week and caught them testing the new corsa vxr and there was a vec estate in a dark red with vxr tailpipes being tested as well but dont know what engine was in it

Seen a picky of a Veccy C with the twin turbo engine. AS things have gone quite I fear that the VXR diesel will be a few months away. DOnt know how long I am willing to wait for my power problem to be sorted (Computer wont register a fault so dealer cant do anything)

I dont want to go in this to much but i have always had petrol cars. It really depends on what you are looking for as in performance. My GSI i have had for 3 years and i love it. When you are on the motorway up and running at most higher speeds i can drop down a gear and yes it will fly. I confirm at 130 it will pull up to 160mph(limiter off)no problem.

A little while ago a few of us went to Santa Pod and raced on the track. I will tell you now DO NOT UNDER ESTIMATE the Diesels. I had a race OR compared my times to Dean(plasma) who has a 1.9 CDTI (888 remap)and he beat me twice. Also the V6 deisels(remapped ones only) also out performed me in the 1/4 mile. A few 3.2 GSI's went and it was the same for them.!!

If i had not spent a huge amount of money on my car i would consider having a deisel(must be remapped). When you are not driving like a **** the fuel comsuption is far better than the petrols. How often on the motorway do you think ?ohh i will now put my foot down at 130 just to prove a point.

Enough said...........you make your own mind up

If you speak to any seasoned Vauxhall Technician he/she will tell you to steer well clear of any CDTi engine (even the little 1.3), they hate them.

I have a CDTi 150 and I'm very happy with it, but then again I do 30k miles a year so I had no choice in going for a diesel. In standard form they are very good engines but tuned up (tuning box or remap) they turn into monsters.

If the car was going to remain standard under the bonnet I'd be going for a 3.0 V6 CDTi for obvious reasons, but if I didn't do the mileage I'd be going for a 3.2 GSi.

To be honest I've never really liked Turbo'd Petrol engines - 'there's no replacement for displacement'.

i remember on the rolling road day we had up in Rainham at Track and Road, Steve was saying that investment being ploughed into diesel technology is huge in comparison to the money going into petrol engines.

unless i was drivng a sports car i don't think i'll be reverting to back to petrol, too damn expensive, plus i love the amount of torque the diesels produce, loads of useable power.

I know a couple of guys that have none Veccy diesel cars nore are they V6's and they wish they had gone for pertol or a bigger diesel.....

Have thought about getting a petrol but I dont do enough miles to get any bennefit from them........ :)

Think its also the size of diesel that makes all the difference. :)

I love my V6 diesel (standard map at moment, which is fine for what i need).I have driven the 3.2 petrol which is fractionally quicker, but you don't get the same shove in the back as you do with the diesel and i don't think the fuel consumption is anywhere near as good.If you take it steady with a diesel (even the V6) you will be rewarded with 40 plus mpg.It doesn't seem to matter how you drive the petrols, they always just seem to eat the stuff.

There's no smoke without fire. ;)

But you have a point. So why don't buses and trucks use petrol engines? :)

So why don't buses and trucks use petrol engines? :)

Being a HGV driver, I cant see a petrol pulling 40 odd ton weight.......

But it does take me 4 days to hit 50 when I fully loaded..... :D

I too have driven artics etc.Don't think any transport manager would be happy with 3-4 mpg. :)

i must admit this is my second diesel (previously2.2dti) and i would find it hard to go back to petrol i like the shove in the back that the turbo provides b ut i perhaps miss the high revving nature of a petrol which is why i like to rev the nuts off ma wee rover every now and again!

It's nice to be able to have one gear be totally usable from 40mph right up to 118mph. Really, most of the time I use two gears, 2nd and 5th. Start off in 2nd, bung it in 5th at 40 and that it. :)

You will be waiting a long time for the twin turbo CDTi, it won't be in Vectra C, late 2008 at the earliest on Vectra D will be when we could see this engine.

Regarding the Diesel/Petrol debate, yes diesels are getting better and are starting to out perform some petrols, but a diesel will never make a true enthusiast's car.

I have and love my CDTi, but for balls out performance, a petrol will always win.

My Audi A3 is 200bhp and 207lb/ft, and compared to my Vectra at 185ishbhp and 300lb/ft, it can't live with the Audi for all out performance.

Agreed, my 4.0 Supercharged Jaguar with 340bhp/360lb-s torque might not handle. But the sound, the rev range and the pure power of the engine is so addictive.

Then the needle drops.....

well for me it's petrol all the way.. but strangely my dad has come from a 2.5V6 to a cdti 150 and loves it to bits..

he still seems to find a reason to 'borrow' mine for a while thou :flail: :flail:

it's all personal choice at the end of the day, we each think ours is the best :D

Vectrapogo car it looks like.. :)

I have a diesel and want a petrol...simple!

Love the economy of the diesel and the performance with the box fitted but it simply is not a petrol :( cant beat revving the nuts of a really good petrol engine and listen to it sing :D

I love my diesel but when I was looking to change from my 2.2 Dti Vectra I did look at various petrols including the F*rd (Don't all throw things at once :fear: ) Focus ST3 (cost with the extras I would want and insurance made this one only a dream) because I was at the stage where I wanted more thrust and power, a test drive in my V6 (along with only an extra £80 for insurance and better economy than a petrol) made my mind up but I dare say I will consider both next time I change again.

Friend has an ST220 Moundeo,he loves it,but when he looked at the average consumption figure on the computer of my V6 diesel (39.4 as it was then),it was more than he could do to hold the tears back. :)

For out and out speed get a petrol, for performance where it matters get a diesel.

Before my present 2.2 DTI, I had a remapped SEAT Leon Cupra (225bhp and 250 lbs/ft). There weren't many diesels that could get close to it. On the other side of the coin, you rarely use that sort of power in everyday driving and even when taking it easy you're still guzzling petrol at a fearsome rate. We all know that manufacturers mpg figs are the product of "imaginitive" advertising.

I came to the conclusion that I'd be better off with a diesel because I rarely used the full performance of my car and tbh I've got better things to spend my hard earned on than fuel. Sure, diesels will always lose out to petrols on top end performance (over 100 mph), you can have as much torque as you want but when your gearing is longer than a British Asylum queue, you've got a handicap from the get go.

I've now done 1000 miles in the 2.2 DTi, averaging 45.9 mpg, hasn't used a drop of oil and I haven't been hanging around. I was getting about 30mpg from the petrol car doing the same sort of driving. Its fast enough for me and 8 insurance groups lower.

Do I miss the power of my petrol turbo? About once a week.

Will I be going back to petrol any time soon? Not bl**dy likely.
