I want to upgrade my front and rear speakers to components but which ones should I go for? I want something that will fit in where the old ones are and have not to much messing around to get them in.I want to just change the sound a little to give a bit more bass without the distortion. I may even consider a sub and amp. All advice welcome Thanks

Have a word with Mark the cabbie or micky as they have both upgraded !!!

ave you got a standard h/unit? if so then changing that will make a huge difference.

if you don't want to go down the route of changing the h/unit then i'd say the best bet is the active sub option like a few members have done and tuck into the cubby hole in the boot.

the standard speakers are very good IMO, and so a sub would aleviate them of any bass duties and let them concentrate on the higher frequency sounds.

don't forget, if you have the CDC40 you get tap off the wiring loom as the multi block at the back of the radio has sub + & - and you can get the CDC40 tech 2'd to activate the sub controls.

Yep run 2 wires from the sub +&- to the rear then y them into 2 sets and connevt to the speaker inputs of your amp/bass tube , Tech 2 it and you have another thing in the sound menu to play with !!!!

I got some component Alpine type 'R' in the front of mine (17cm) but i did cut a little bit of the door to line them up ok as the hole is 3/4 round with a flat bit at the bottom (also only about 3mm behind speaker when the window is down  ). Put 17cm Type 'R' in the rear as well but they were a doddle (Not component though just dual cone). Got a double din Kenwood dvd player at the front.

Also whacked a couple of 12" type 'R' Subs in a sealed box with a couple of ALpine amp's in the spare wheel well (Tyre weld is now my friend lol) and a Stinger battery in the cubby hole on the right with a split charge relay topping that up.

Sounds good (only been in there since Sunday) but the boot lid rattles like a b*tch its not in the boot but the lock that holds boot shut :(

Gotta add this, I once and only once bought a brand new car, it was a 405 and at the time I had this thing bling'd up before most ppl had thought about it on a new car, I added 405 badges to the door rub strips just like most cars have now, put Pug ones on all 4 mudflaps, car was white so I got some then SRi wheel trims and had them sprayed white and detailed the veins in black, and also had the slated panel between the rear lights painted white, guess what Pug did when the facelifted it? yup made the boodlid meet the bumper in body colour, and finally i had her running lower profiles at the front than the back, and as one young lady said to me as she got in....quote....CORRR this cars well pumped up mate! :D

Anyway, inside I made 3 mods, one was the all the rage fluffy seat covers in black diamonds, the second was to ditch the Pug radio cassette and replace it with a Kenwood unit and the third to replace all four door speakers with Kenwood ones, guess what? no sound difference at all, all I got for my then £80 was a hole in the wallet, so i recommend the sub route for anyone wanting a bit more, seems the makers put good quality speakers in anyway.

And i'm sorry I cant post pics off it, I only ever photographed it once with another white one my mate bought a week later and trusted trueprint to develop them, and got back some xmas party shots, customer services wouldn't answer the phone and they were lost forever.

trusted trueprint to develop them

heh!?!?!i'm confused  ....don't you mean you uploaded them onto your pc and then printed them off at home!?

what's all this "developing" business about then?!? :flail:

was that some fancy gadget they had back in the ??'s

good thing it was a white car Ian....wouldn't have been able to capture the colour of the car otherwise on a black and white print!

95% disagree - The odd car has ok speakers in it but a majority are pants. We had Kenwood & Alpine down for a day of training and they told us that most manufacturers only allow £1 per speaker! Thats why Kenny etc will not make them as they dont want there name brought down for the sake of a few ex6tra ££'s in there pocket. They said even the higher end models - Jags / Range rover etc only allow about £5.

However a mate has a bmw which i persuaded him to upgrade head unit & speakers. We did the head unit 1st and OMG the sound is amazing so much he blew out the speaker idea :(

I had Kicker components in the front of my pug, Total diference in sound quality. You can have a top notch install without rear speakers, they just reinforce the sound and can also ruin the sound stage if not set up right! Best leave the rears till last mate. A good set of components (not forgetting good wire), Dynomat and if you wish a small sub in the boot cubby will do you fine mate. Get yourself down to unicar on kirkstall rd mate have a look around in there. Got loads of top stuff and they have far greater knowledge than halfords and the like.

@ Maddog, I'll accept that, it was back in 89 I had that car so maybe now things are different in the quality stakes, just my own experience at the time bud.

@ Harry, gwon rub it in about my elder status, you'll be there one day yourself ya cheeky whippersnapper :D and you have just given me an idea for a new smiley icon now, how about a little old man waving his cane in the air :flail:

Trueprint incase you have never heard of them were one of those photo companies who you sent the film in to by post and for about half what it cost in a shop they were supposed to develop your film and sent your pics back, obviously the trick was to run a batch of patsy pics up and dump the customers film saving on darkroom time and then not answer the phone

well i've just upgraded the h/unit and the factory speakers see alot better than they did before - obvious i know, but that can handle an impressive amount of bass without any distortion whilst keeping very clear on the top end! i'm impressed...i'll keep unitl they die then swap 'em.

2005 = err, sling a radio in that'lldo.

Really thinking of an upgrade myself right now, one that plays discs would help

you won't regret it VV - i haven't...fair enough it spoils that clean look a bit but the end result regarding sound quality and the ability to play any format on cd/dvd is a huge bonus!
