View Full Version : Fuel Gauge problem?

I've got a couple of questions regarding my fuel gauge!

First of all, I notice that the last 1/4 of a tank drops away in no time at all, so when it gets to 1/4 its time to think about where to fill up, even before it hits the red.

When it does get in the red, its not long before I start getting some misfiring, presumably due to poor fuel-flow. I know its still got about a gallon in the tank though.

Is this a design fault, a dodgy sender unit, or does it need calibrating?

What model/year have you got? There is an issue with the fuel gauges/instrument programming on certain years. I'll dig out the Field Remedy in the meantime.

2005 (like last month), petrol 2.2 direct.

Its (obviously) still under warranty, so I could drop it back at the dealer for fixing if necessary, and if possible.

I've noticed the sudden fall off in the last half of the tank.. I took it a s if it was like the old ford orions, Which had an odd shaped tank. The fuel guage never budged from full for the first 200 miles, then once past half a tank, fell like a stone. OR is it my heavy right foot. 60 litres = 280 miles!!( if I'm a good lad)

Nope, I just assumed that 1/4 tank would safely get me about 50 miles or so. In fact that's pushing it!

What worries me is when it starts misfiring, just like I'm running out of fuel (and yes, I do know exactly what that feels like  ), although I reckon ther e must still be at least 1.5 gallons in the tank.

Lloydy, have a look at this PDF (http://www.vectra-c.com/forum/uploader/pics/pics1/E0001619.pdf). I know it only says it relates to Signum but it may be that the Vec C's are affected with a similar problem. Although I couldn't find any fuel gauge issues for the Vec C.

Maybe talk to your dealer about it.

Cheers Duncan, I think I'll have a word with them, like you suggest.

Well I still haven't booked it into the dealer to have the fuel gauge checked, but I did a little experiment this morning after first making sure I had a full jerry-can in the back!

Everything is fine down to about 1/4 tank. From there, after about 15 miles it hits the red and the warning light comes on. Here's the odd-thing... it seems that at the same time as the warning light comes on, the engine stutters and nearly stalls, but it soon sorts itself out and I can carry on driving.

After another 20 miles or so the gauge has dropped well into the red and the warning light starts flashing. At the exact same moment as it starts flashing the engine stutters and again nearly stalls on me. At this point I dive into the garage that I've been "circling" around, and fill her up with 58.7 litres (so I reckon I had about 1/2 gallon left in the tank).

So, why does the engine nearly stall when the warning light first comes on, and yet I can then drive another twenty miles without any problem? Does the warning light trigger a change in the ECU, e.g. switch to a more conservative map?

How many miles would you expect to be able to go after the warning light comes on?

How many more miles after it starts flashing?

In any case I'll be booking it in for a checkup, but I was just curious!

my 2.2sri drops like a stone after half a tank but i had a dash change as it had a crack in the plastic when i bought the car.so i think i have got an 05 dash as the dials look slightly differnt(not sure though as the misses drives it mainley) but when the petrol gauge shows just uner 1/4 tank the 30 mile warning comes on but i have never had a flashing warning light and believe me i have had that mileage warning signal flashing zero(just to scare the misses when im on the m6 motorway

Is this mileage warning signal something to do with the trip computer? I don't have one!

Yes, as well as the flashing symbol on the dash, which you will have, the trip computer starts to flash up a fuel pump symbol with your range left when you get below 30mile range.

Damn clever things... Can it make the tea as well?

Dont know if this is any good but on my last car the Ford focus Diesel when the Fuel warning light comes on the car is programmed to misfire to remind the driver that it is very low on fuel maybe the same thing is happening here ???
