Question Is my X18XE engine thermostat failing

    Hey all,

I just noticed this week that the temp gage in my car is reading lower than normal but is still reading...

It used to always sit arround 90 (half way) and would klib if in trafic towards 100 until the fan kicked in and cooled it. Like wise when driving it would sometime fall as low as 85 but for the most part it sits arround 90.

Just in the last few days i have noticed it is sitting at 80, klimbing to 85 while being driven and as high as 90 when sat in traffice etc.. I also have noticed that when comming off the motorway onto the side roads it will drop from 85 to 80 and I am able to watch the temprature needle rise and fall as i coast along these types of road (rising from 80 to 85).

It does not fall below 80 once it warms up which takes the normal amount of time. There is also no loss of head from the heating matrix etc also...

I tried searching and could not find a difinitative answer on how to tell if the engine thermostat is failing but have found the tutorial on how to replace it which is ace and will be getting used if it turns out to be this...

So experts... let me know your thoughts....?

They all fail, seems to be a trait, but as long as its not flat on the floor when your driving its most likely ok. Should sit at 85 at this time of year. I replaced mine last year and I think its on its way out again. I will replace mine with a genuine unit next year instead of the insert I did last year. Genuine part is now around £30 from Vauxhall World Parts and ebay. Theres a how2, its dead easy and less than an hour to change it.
BTW Vec C never came fitted with the big block X18XE only Z18XE(16v) or Z18XER(vvt). Sure its sommit like the X18XE is a sleeved down version of the 2.0 X20XE and the Z18XE is a bored out version of the small block 1.6

ahhh.. cool... you know your stuff on the engine front. I noticed you how to... excelent work and looks dead easy to follow..

Will hang fire with it and keep an eye on the temp gage and fuel consumption... If it starts to drop them I will do the swap out.

You have the silver engine cover on your lump and I have a black cover. is that the only difference betweent he two engines?

    This is my engine...

I had wondered if buying the full housing and gasket etc would be better...? I spotted this on the bay...

Seems a good price but I dont think it's gm...

I saw this one on Vaux parts world also

The one on VWP comes with the new temp sender unit too, sure Ive seen them at around £30, maybe they've put them up in price now the cold weathers here and they are selling more. Ive noticed a small drop in MPG, not sure whether to put it down to the colder weather, or that ive added the short air intake, or that the stat is taking an extra mile to reach 85 degree's. Yea mine came with the silver cover but Ive since changed it to the black better looking one now.
