Not enough miles? takes 5 miles to fully warm the engine up.

Half of those miles are done each way before the engine is fully warmed up. So on that basis 40mpg is about right.

Go on a long run mostly motorway and A-roads and you'll see the difference.

I do a similar daily commute, and average 42mpg, so yours sound about right to me. Just averaged 52.3mpg on a long 551 mile journey. As has been said short runs are not the best test of a deisel.

You cant expect big miles from short /stop start journeys with a 1.9, but it wouldnt harm someone with the knowlege of the common faults of these giving it the once over. 'not your local monkey' it needs inside info from a fellow owner. or if your spanner wise look at the 'how 2' section for cleaning the boost sensor, EGR, & REPAIR YOUR SWIRL BAR FOR A £1 (if its fell off). using bp ultimate or shell v power is good too.

I couldn't recommend BP Ultimate or Shell v Power. They are so much more expensive that they would have to produce a huge increase in mpg to be worth while. A test by the AA indicated if anything, MPG was reduced when these 'premium' fuels were used.

I tried the V power, out of interest/curiousity, didn't notice them MPG but car seemed a bit smoother on it. Been back on normal Shell (all the nearby garages are Shell) for a month or so, usually put injector cleaner through as well.

I should say this was for premium deisels and premioum petrol used in standard cars. Many higher performance cars need higher octane petrol because that is how they are set up. My Octavia vRS with the 1.8T (180) enigne needed 98 fuel to run properly.
