Question Anyone ever tried insuring a Cat D Write off?

    Hi All,

a girl turned left from the right hand lane at a roundabout in front of me on the way home from work this evening...

Result = bumper, offside wing, offside headlight, etc, damaged, though not too badly...

As the car's old and carrying a few miles (and scars) it looks like it'll be a un-economical repair write off. There doesn't appear to be anything I can't fix for a few pennies (subject to a closer look in daylight).

... so anticipating the worst, has anyone ever tried insuring a cat D write off? There's loads of life left in the car, so is it worth it or should I just let it go?

The insurance quote will be as if it was not bumped, but if you have another accident thats when they take a percentage off the payout they give you because its a cat D

I have just gone through this with mine which was a cat C write off, I had to get a VIC (vehicle identity check) check from VOSA for £41 My insurance also required me to get a new MOT and a independent engineers report on the car (sounds expensive but got one done for £60 wel lworth it as if and hopefully not it happens again I have a much better argument when they try and give me peanuts for the car cos its a write off when I have the engineers reports stating that it was in good condition!) otherwise I had no change in premium at all and mines a taxi policy!

cat D's do not need VIC checks but the engineers report is worth the money just for yourself if it happens again could get you a more sensible payout
